Post Hebrew Kinship Terms - Question
Hi there,

can anybody tell me about Ancient Hebrew kinship terms? (Or, if not, Modern?)
I want to know if there are seperate terms for in-laws on the aunt/uncle-level. That means:

- How is my mother's sister called?
- How is the husband of my mother's sister called? (Not when speaking to him, but when speaking about him to a third party which doesn't know him yet.)
- How is my mother's brother called?
- How is the wife of my mother's brother called?
- Can these terms also be used for my father's sister/brother/etc.?

I'd be glad about the terms (also transliterated, if possible), it would help me lots!
If any of you know good material explaining the kinship system, please tell me.

Thanks a lot!
Kristin.

As far as I'm aware there are no specific terms to refer to uncles-by-marriage or aunts-by-marriage (can you say "aunt-in-law" or not?). That doesn't necessarily mean they don't exist, just that they're not used in the modern language.

One's uncle is called דוד dod, and one's aunt דודה dóda.

The only inlaw terms I know of are for parents-in-law and siblings-in-law:

Father-in-law: חותן choten
Mother-in-law: חותנת choténet
Brother-in-law: גיס gis
Sister-in-law: גיסה gisa

(Stress on final syllable unless otherwise marked)
